Habitat Restoration Technician

Gulf South Research Corporation (GSRC) is seeking to fill Habitat Restoration Technician positions in Carlsbad, CA to work on natural resource projects in the region. The Habitat Restoration Technician will gain experience in many aspects of this diverse field including but not limited to: invasive species control and native vegetation management (e.g., seeding, planting, vegetation monitoring/ sampling); native plant propagation, restoration, maintenance and performance monitoring; GPS field applications and GIS coordination; environmental monitoring during construction activities; and other tasks as directed by project needs. Specific duties associated with invasive species control may include 4-wheel driving, accurate plant identification, herbicide application, brush cutter and chainsaw operation, and equipment maintenance. The employee will work with crews of 3-12 field staff and will report directly to GSRC Crew Leaders and the Carlsbad Office Manager.
This is a temporary/seasonal job as the employee will be hired initially for a 6-month work period, with the opportunity for extension and promotion depending on performance and work availability. The employee will be expected to work 40 hours a week and occasional overtime, weekend assignments, and extended work trips involving regional travel. Benefits include 10 paid holidays and sick time accrued, and flexibility is offered for sick days and other absences.
This position requires a college degree in a natural resources discipline, with field experience highly recommended either through college research project(s) or practical work experience. Possession of at least Maintenance Gardener Pest Control Certification (QAC-Q) issued by the California Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) is desired. However, if the candidate does not possess at least a QAC-Q at hiring, they are expected to obtain it within the first two months of employment. GSRC will pay for all testing materials, licensing fees, and study time.
Compensation will be $20/hr if the applicant possesses at least a current QAC-Q, or it will be $18/hr if hired without the certification – until it is obtained. Note that if the applicant currently possesses a Qualified Applicators License (QAL), compensation will be $22/hr.
